52 Ancesters 2026 Week 5 - A Breakthrough Moment

Still waiting for my breakthrough moment.   I’ve been researching my family tree for decades now, and while many branches have flourished, one stubborn line on my maternal side continues to defy me. No matter how many times I circle back, the wall stands firm.

And at the centre of it all is one man: William Wadey.

What I Do Know

The facts I’ve managed to gather are few, but they’ve been my compass for years:

  • William Wadey, born around 1764 (based on his age at death)

  • Married Hannah Burstow in Brighton in 1825, listed as a widower

  • Died in Brighton in 1828, aged 64

  • No baptism or birth record that convincingly matches him

  • No earlier marriage found that aligns with the “widower” status

I’ve combed through Sussex records more times than I can count. I’ve followed every William Wadey born remotely near that timeframe. I’ve traced marriages across the county, hoping to find a first wife who died before 1825. Every lead fizzles out the same way: the supposed spouse is still alive long after William’s burial.

Which leaves me wondering—was he truly a widower? Or did he simply leave a wife behind somewhere, intentionally or otherwise?

Where Do I Go From Here?

Despite the dead ends and the circular searches, I can’t quite let it go. There’s always that tiny spark of optimism that the next record, the next archive visit, the next digitised collection might finally reveal who William really was.

Maybe this is a breakthrough that will never happen—or maybe it’s just waiting for the right moment.

Either way, I’m not giving up. Not yet.
